Ubix.Exchange - the crypto exchange of the Ubix.Network ecosystem

Ubix.Exchange is the exchange of the Ubix.Network ecosystem, with free listings for early Web3 projects. We took over a working product: redressed the interfaces, pulled scattered backend services into one system with a single entry point, and connected the exchange to the rest of the ecosystem. All of it on a live product, without pausing trading.

The task

The exchange worked, but it consisted of parts that had grown separately. From the outside it was a set of unrelated screens; on the inside, services that each had their own login logic and their own arrangements with the neighbours. Both sides needed sorting out.

• Build a design system and roll it out across every screen.
• Pull the backend services into one system with a single entry point.
• Connect the exchange to the wallet, staking and the rest of the ecosystem.
• Do all of it without pausing trading and without breaking anything for users.

We counted the screens until there were fifty. After that we stopped: the interface kept growing throughout the project.

Migrating on a live system

The main constraint of the project was not technical but human: the exchange has users, and their money is in it. You cannot pause trading for a migration, there is nowhere to roll back to, and any outage is visible to everyone at once.

So we moved in pieces: the new setup was raised next to the old one, traffic was shifted in portions, and each piece worked both ways until it was clear it could take the load. Quite a few solutions had to be found off the beaten track - the usual approaches assume you can stop the system for at least an hour. We did not have even a few minutes.

Other people's money is handled more carefully than your own. And downtime hits the pocket twice: first through direct losses, then through reputation, which on an exchange takes far longer to win back than money.

In the end the move went unnoticed by users. That was the main acceptance criterion.

Automation and control of operations

While the system lived in two setups at once, watching it by hand stopped working. We wrote bots and alerts: service health, account balances, new listings, events that had been tracked by eye before.

Handling funds was a story of its own. Operational fixes ship more often than a full audit can keep up with, so assets were deliberately not kept in one place: bots watched the balances and topped up what was being spent. As parts of the system became stable, some checks were switched off, and new ones appeared in new places.

The service side - bots, alerts and monitoring - runs on PostgreSQL.

Design system and working with charts

The Urbanist typeface, a four-colour palette, consistent states and spacing. But the key decision was not about style - it was about eyesight.

A trading terminal means hours in front of high-contrast charts. Red on black, green on black, small figures in the order book: after half an hour the eye stops telling details apart, while the person keeps making decisions about money. We took this on as a separate task and removed contrast where it carries no meaning, keeping it where it does.

Accounts, deposits and withdrawals

Three types of account - main, trading and staking - with transfers between them. Deposits and withdrawals for every coin, with a choice of network and a fee hint right in the form. Operation history with a CSV export.

Frequently asked questions sit on the withdrawal screen itself rather than in a help section: people read them where the doubt appears.

Mobile version

Chart, order book and trades on one screen, with no tab switching. People trade differently on a phone: they look fast and decide fast.

User-issued tokens

The exchange serves not only the ecosystem's own coins but also tokens issued by its users through the 4Tokens service. A person sets the ticker, the emission volume and the number of decimals - without a single line of code. The token appears on the wallet balance straight away and is listed automatically, free of charge.

For the exchange this meant a separate line of work: a new token has to show up in trading, in the wallet and in staking by itself, with no manual steps on our side.
